are there public references for Express and Step specifications? #454
hello, I just found out about this project, are the grammars in this code base the only public / open access specifications for Express and STEP files? (i'm interested in building my own open source tooling for STEP CAD, and i'm not sure what has public access documents, or which specifications i'd have to buy from ANSI or ISO)
One of our sponsors paid the $10k+ fees to ISO for us over 10 years ago, so we do have the specs for several of the most important APs, but they're not public / open access. They can only be used within our community by contributors.
The grammars are publicly available on the Express engine site.Express Engine / Express Engine Commit Logsourceforge.netAnd:EXPRESS language referencesexpresslang.org(Note that there are structures permitted by the bnf that are not permitted by the text of ISO 10303-11.)Sent from my iPhoneOn Jul 27, 2023, at 10:50 AM, Carter Tazio Schonwald ***@***.***> wrote:

this is all super helpful. I'm pretty comfortable with programming language engineering things, so the express specification language actually looks shockingly well designed from my quick looks.

@cartazio It should go without saying, but you're more than welcome to build new STEP tooling within the context of the STEPcode project. We're always interested having new folks join in development. You'll find there's a libexpress for part 11, a STEP Data Access Interface (SDAI) conforming generator that generates an AP parser library given one of the STEP schemas (e.g., AP203), and more, but you're also not constrained by what's already there if you have new things you want to work on.
Should also be noted - before starting anything check no one already has
something in progress, I have a number of things I don't currently find
time to progress on!
