Otto Hohmann was born on 1 Apr 1910 in Altenburg, Thüringen. He joined the Kriegsmarine as a Rating in 1937. Otto Hohmann was promoted to Oblt. (Rating) on 1 Dec 1942. From May 1940 to Apr 1941, he served as Boatswain Watch Officer on Schiff 7. Otto Hohmann commanded Schiff 7 from May 1941 to Feb 1943.

He underwent U-boat training from Mar 1943 to Sep 1943. Otto Hohmann completed U-boat Commander's Course and U-boat Familiarization (Baubelehrung), including Torpedo Course 56, from Sep to Nov 1943. He commanded the type VIIC/41 boat U-298 from 1 Dec 1943 to 17 Jul 1944. Otto Hohmann undertook a course and U-boat Familiarization (Baubelehrung) for the type XXI boat with the 8.KLA from Jul to Dec 1944. He commanded the type XXI boat U-2526 from 15 Dec 1944 to 2 May 1945.
