CPython does not raise an exception for invalid modes passed to os.access. Instead, it simply returns false for any errors returned by faccessat or the Windows equivalent.

Summary

  • Improve CPython compat and simplify code.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • os.access now returns False when an access check fails instead of raising an exception. On platforms with explicit access-mode validation, invalid modes also return False.
    • On Unix-like platforms, unknown access-mode bits are no longer rejected before the check; the result reflects whether the system access check succeeds.

Walkthrough

Host check_access functions now return bool instead of Result<bool, AccessError>. The Python os.access wrapper returns the host result directly. The changes also adjust target-specific permission helpers, remove the Unix AccessError conversion, and add a test for access mode 255.

Changes: POSIX access checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Host access-check contract
crates/host_env/src/posix.rs, crates/host_env/src/posix_unix_like.rs
The POSIX module re-exports access constants. Permissions and get_permissions are limited to ESP-IDF, Horizon, and Vita. Both host access-check implementations return booleans. The Unix-like implementation retains unrecognized mode bits and returns the access system call’s success result.
Python access wrapper and test
crates/vm/src/stdlib/posix.rs, crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_os.py
os.access returns the host boolean through its existing PyResult<bool> return type. The Unix AccessError conversion is removed. A test asserts that mode 255 returns false for a temporary file.

The access checks now return false on host errors, and the target-specific compilation issue is fixed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.
