Fix _pycodecs error handler result validation - #9504
unicode_call_errorhandler in Lib/_pycodecs.py validated an error
handler's return value by indexing it (res[0], res[1]) without first
checking the tuple length. For codecs backed by _pycodecs (for example
the charmap codec used by iso-8859-15):
a handler returning a 1-tuple such as ("foo",) leaked IndexError: tuple index out of range instead of raising TypeError;
a handler returning a 3-tuple such as ("foo", 1, 3) was silently
accepted, with the extra element ignored.
CPython raises TypeError for both, as does RustPython's Rust-side ErrorsHandler (crates/vm/src/codecs.rs). This change requires the
returned tuple to have exactly two elements before indexing it.
The CPython test test_codeccallbacks.test_badhandlerresults covered
this behaviour and was marked @unittest.expectedFailure with # TODO: RUSTPYTHON; it now passes, so the marker is removed. A
regression test is added to extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_codecs_wide.py.

CPython test expectations against a locally built RustPython,
identified the faulty validation in Lib/_pycodecs.py, wrote the
one-line fix, the regression test, and this description. All code was
verified locally by building RustPython from this tree and running the
reproduction script, the new snippet test, and the test_codeccallbacks, test_codecs, test_charmapcodec, and test_multibytecodec suites on Linux (the platform the agent has
access to). The commit message carries the required Assisted-by: Muse:Muse Spark 1.3 trailer; no Co-authored-by

Tests
Reproduction script (mirrors test_badhandlerresults): 4 failures
before the fix (no raise for ("foo", 1, 3); IndexError for ("foo",), each twice due to duplicate entries in the test data),
0 failures after; CPython 3.12 reports 0 failures on the same script.
New snippet test test_charmap_error_handler_bad_results in extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_codecs_wide.py: fails before the fix
(AssertionError: error handler result ('foo', 1, 3) was not rejected), passes after.
./target/debug/rustpython -m test test_codeccallbacks — SUCCESS,
43 tests run; test_badhandlerresults ... ok.
./target/debug/rustpython -m test test_charmapcodec test_codecs —
SUCCESS, 292 tests run.
./target/debug/rustpython -m test test_multibytecodec — OK
(36 tests run in a combined run with a non-existent module name;

Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Expanded coverage for charmap encoding error handlers, checking that invalid results raise a TypeError and valid results produce the expected encoded byte.
unicode_call_errorhandler in Lib/_pycodecs.py indexed the error
handler's return value before checking its length, so a handler
returning a one-element tuple raised IndexError instead of TypeError,
and a three-element tuple was silently accepted. Both cases are
reachable through charmap codecs (e.g. iso-8859-15). Require exactly
two elements, matching CPython and the Rust ErrorsHandler.
Remove the expectedFailure marker from
test_codeccallbacks.test_badhandlerresults, which now passes, and add
a regression test to extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_codecs_wide.py.

Walkthrough
Adds a test for charmap encoding error-handler results. It checks that invalid results raise TypeError and that a valid (str, int) result produces the expected encoded byte.
The validation fix has no established behavioral regression. Remove the redundant malformed-result tests while retaining the valid-handler check; the remaining concern is bounded test maintenance.

Done in 9b815ef: the snippet addition is gone, so the regression coverage is only the re-enabled test_badhandlerresults in Lib/test/test_codeccallbacks.py (passes locally, 43 tests OK).
Change and reply prepared with Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code).
The re-enabled test_badhandlerresults in Lib/test already covers the
malformed handler results. Use tuple.__len__ so a tuple subclass that
overrides __len__ is validated by its stored length, as in CPython.
