Report a missing argument before converting any - #9513
FuncArgs::bind_for rejects surplus positional arguments before converting any (#9242), but a missing required argument is found only when FromArgs::from_args reaches it, after the arguments ahead of it have been converted. A conversion can run user code, so itertools.compress(it) raises whatever it.__iter__() raises. CPython's _PyArg_UnpackKeywords checks both bounds before itertools_compress_impl calls iter().
mmap() is the exception. CPython still parses it with PyArg_ParseTupleAndKeywords, which converts the arguments it was given before it reports a missing one, so mmap.mmap(x) raises whatever x.__index__() raises. Among the 3.15.2 callers of PyArg_ParseTupleAndKeywords with two or more required arguments, it is the only one RustPython binds natively where converting an earlier argument runs user code.
date() and datetime() moved to Argument Clinic in 3.15 and get the early check. They were bound with no name, so a missing argument was reported as function missing required argument.
In crates/vm/src/function/argument.rs, when fewer positional arguments are given than the lower arity bound, bind_for walks T::PARAMS for the first required positional parameter that neither a positional argument nor a keyword fills, and reports it before from_args runs. The walk, missing_positional(), follows duplicate_name_and_position(): a positional-or-keyword parameter gives MissingRequiredArgument, a positional-only one gives TooFewArgs.
Only bindings that declare PARAMS, which the FromArgs derive does, are covered. Tuple bindings of bare objects, such as math.comb(x) or list.insert(x), keep converting first, and required keyword-only parameters are not checked early.
Add FromArgs::CONVERTS_BEFORE_MISSING, set by #[pyarg(convert_before_missing)] on a derived struct, which skips the early check. A tuple binding, as a #[pyfunction] uses, and a struct flattening such a field inherit it. Both MmapNewArgs set it.
In crates/stdlib/src/_datetime.rs, bind the date() and datetime() arguments by name.
Extend extra_tests/snippets/vm_argument_errors.py with compress() missing selectors, given data by position, by keyword, and alongside an unrelated keyword, and date() given a raising __index__. Extend stdlib_mmap.py with mmap() given one, which still raises it; mmap is not built on WASI.
Test plan
Built and run on macOS aarch64 against upstream/main 713e14c, using the CI feature set --no-default-features --features stdlib,importlib,stdio,encodings,sqlite,ssl-rustls-aws-lc,host_env,doc,ucd_3_2_0, plus threading, compared with CPython 3.15.2.
The extended extra_tests/snippets/vm_argument_errors.py fails on an unpatched build of that commit (at compress(FailingIter())) and passes with the patch and under CPython 3.15.2.
rustpython -m test test_itertools test_math test_builtin test_datetime test_mmap: 1,598 run, 162 skipped, all pass.
The stdlib_datetime.py and extended stdlib_mmap.py snippets pass.
cargo test -p rustpython-vm --lib function::argument::tests passes, and fails with the tuple forwarding removed.
cargo fmt --check clean, and ruff format --check and ruff check pass on the snippet.
The Windows MmapNewArgs is not built here.
I used Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5) to draft the analysis, the patch and this description; I reviewed the change and ran every command above myself.

Bug Fixes
Missing required arguments are reported before supplied values are converted when the callable’s argument rules require it. Errors identify the first unfilled parameter when possible.
Callables that convert supplied values first retain that behavior, including date, datetime, and memory-mapping argument parsing.
This makes argument errors more consistent across positional, keyword, and mixed calls, including cases where converting a supplied value would otherwise raise an error.
FuncArgs::bind_for counted surplus positional arguments before
converting any, but a missing required argument was found only when
FromArgs::from_args reached it, after converting the arguments ahead
of it. A conversion can run user code, so itertools.compress(it)
raised whatever it.__iter__() raised instead of the TypeError for the
missing selectors argument.
When fewer positional arguments are given than the lower arity bound,
walk T::PARAMS for the first required positional parameter that no
argument fills and report it before from_args runs.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Argument binding now checks for missing required positional arguments before converting supplied arguments by default. A struct-level derive attribute lets selected argument types convert supplied arguments first. Constructor bindings and tests cover both behaviors.
FuncArgs::bind_for checks for an unfilled required positional parameter before conversion. FromArgs::CONVERTS_BEFORE_MISSING and the struct-level convert_before_missing attribute control this behavior. Tuple implementations and flattened fields propagate the flag.
The date and datetime constructors use bind_for with their type names. Unix and Windows mmap argument types opt into conversion before missing-argument checks. Tests check missing-argument errors and conversion-error precedence.
RustPython/RustPython#9506: The changes address the reported itertools.compress behavior by checking for the missing selectors argument before converting supplied arguments.
Possibly related PRs
RustPython/RustPython#9242: It adds an early surplus-positional-argument check in FuncArgs::bind_for; this PR adds an early missing-required-argument check in the same path.
The argument-ordering change is mergeable with a small documentation correction or follow-up. The documentation currently overstates which missing arguments take precedence over conversion errors.

Explanation
Issue #9506 requires a missing required argument to be reported before conversion of supplied arguments. FuncArgs::bind_for now performs this check before FromArgs::from_args for bindings with PARAMS. The check accounts for positional and keyword-filled parameters. The added tests cover itertools.compress with positional, keyword, and mixed calls. The implementation therefore reports missing selectors before data.__iter__() runs. The CONVERTS_BEFORE_MISSING opt-out preserves the required mmap.mmap() behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed argument-binding and derive code implements the shared behavior required by issue #9506. The date and datetime name bindings produce the required error context. The mmap opt-out preserves its documented conversion order. The tests cover these related cases and the direct compress reproductions. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

mmap() is parsed by PyArg_ParseTupleAndKeywords, which converts the
arguments it was given before it reports a missing one, so
mmap.mmap(x) raises whatever x.__index__ raises. Reporting the missing
length first broke that. Add FromArgs::CONVERTS_BEFORE_MISSING, set by
#[pyarg(convert_before_missing)] on the struct, skip the early check
for it, and mark both MmapNewArgs.
date and datetime moved to Argument Clinic in 3.15, so they now report
the missing argument first, but bound with no name and said
"function missing required argument". Bind them for "date" and
"datetime".

The early missing-argument check misses a required positional that follows an optional one.
The check runs only when the positional count is below arity.start(). That value counts the required positional fields. The gate therefore assumes required fields fill a prefix of the positions. TkAppConstructorArgs declares want_tk (default = true) before the required use_. Seven positional arguments equal the required count, so the gate skips the check. from_args then converts want_tk before it reaches use_. A conversion error from want_tk then hides the missing-argument error for use_.

Add a datetime.datetime missing-month case to the snippet.
The snippet checks the named missing-argument message for date() and compress(), but no case checks it for datetime.datetime(). The constructor now binds with args.bind_for(vm, "datetime"). A revert to unnamed bind would not fail the snippet. Add a case that omits month and asserts the named message:

Narrow the derive doc on missing-argument order.
The doc says a missing argument is reported before conversion when convert_before_missing is absent. missing_positional skips required keyword-only parameters, so an earlier argument that fails conversion raises first. The doc should state only the cases the binder checks early.

A #[pyfunction] binds its arguments as a tuple, and the tuple FromArgs
impl did not forward CONVERTS_BEFORE_MISSING, so the attribute only
worked for a struct bound directly, such as a constructor's Args. OR
it over the tuple's members, and over a derived struct's flattened
fields, and cover both with a unit test.
Move the mmap() case to stdlib_mmap.py: mmap is not built on WASI, which
runs vm_argument_errors.py but skips stdlib_mmap.py.

Add a behavior test for mixed tuple binding order.
The test converts_before_missing_reaches_every_binding checks only CONVERTS_BEFORE_MISSING constants. A change to bind_for that reorders missing-argument and conversion errors for (OptionalArg<i32>, ConvertsFirst) would leave this test passing. Add a test that binds this tuple with a raising conversion and a missing required argument. Assert the raised exception and whether the conversion ran.

itertools.compress(x)callsx.__iter__()before reporting the missingselectorsargument #9506Summary
FuncArgs::bind_forrejects surplus positional arguments before converting any (#9242), but a missing required argument is found only whenFromArgs::from_argsreaches it, after the arguments ahead of it have been converted. A conversion can run user code, soitertools.compress(it)raises whateverit.__iter__()raises. CPython's_PyArg_UnpackKeywordschecks both bounds beforeitertools_compress_implcallsiter().mmap()is the exception. CPython still parses it withPyArg_ParseTupleAndKeywords, which converts the arguments it was given before it reports a missing one, sommap.mmap(x)raises whateverx.__index__()raises.
