Convert an __index__ key before refusing item assignment or deletion - #9516
PyObject::set_item and PyObject::del_item convert the key only when the type has an ass_item slot. A type with a sequence table but no ass_item, such as tuple, str, bytes, range or any heap type, raises TypeError without looking at the key. CPython's PyObject_SetItem and PyObject_DelItem convert an __index__ key with PyNumber_AsSsize_t(key, PyExc_IndexError) first, so an exception from __index__ propagates and an int that does not fit raises IndexError.

Changes
Add sequence_index_key() to crates/vm/src/protocol/object.rs: it converts an __index__ key to isize and maps an overflow to IndexError.
set_item calls it before raising when the type has a sequence table. del_item calls it under the same condition and keeps the "doesn't support" wording for an index key only, so a non-index key now gets "does not support", as in CPython.
Extend extra_tests/snippets/protocol_index_bad.py with assignment and deletion on tuple, bytes, str and a plain class, through operator.setitem/operator.delitem as well, an oversized key, and the two deletion messages.
Test plan
Built and run on macOS aarch64 against upstream/main 713e14c, using the CI feature set --no-default-features --features stdlib,importlib,stdio,encodings,sqlite,ssl-rustls-aws-lc,host_env,doc,ucd_3_2_0, plus threading, compared with CPython 3.15.2.
The extended extra_tests/snippets/protocol_index_bad.py fails on an unpatched build of that commit (at t[RaisingIndex()] = 0) and passes with the patch and under CPython 3.15.2.
A probe over set, frozenset, mappingproxy, dict_keys, range, a read-only memoryview, int, None, type and a generator, assigning and deleting with a raising __index__ key, gives the same exception class as CPython for all 20 cases.
rustpython -m test test_operator test_tuple test_index test_bytes test_str test_userlist test_array test_mmap test_range test_set test_dict: 2,698 run, 115 skipped, all pass.
pytest -k rustpython in extra_tests: 248 pass.
cargo fmt --check clean, cargo clippy -p rustpython-vm -- -Dwarnings reports nothing, and the pre-commit hooks pass on both changed files.
I used Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5) to draft the analysis, the patch and this description; I reviewed the change and ran every command above myself.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Item assignment and deletion now process index-like keys consistently before reporting unsupported-operation errors. Exceptions raised during index conversion are preserved.
Oversized tuple indices now raise IndexError during assignment or deletion.
Deletion errors now use wording that reflects whether the key was successfully converted to an index, and show the object’s current type name after conversion.
When a type has a sequence table but no ass_item slot, such as tuple,
bytes, str or any heap type, item assignment and deletion raised
TypeError without looking at the key. An index key is converted first,
so an exception from its __index__ propagates and an int too large for
an index raises IndexError. Only then is the operation refused.
Do that conversion in set_item() and del_item(). Deletion keeps the
"doesn't support" wording for index keys only, and uses "does not
support" for any other key.

Assignment and deletion now attempt sequence-style index conversion for relevant types before returning unsupported-operation errors. Conversion exceptions and oversized indices are covered by tests. The tests also check deletion error messages.

Summary
Index conversion and unsupported-operation handling crates/vm/src/protocol/object.rs, extra_tests/snippets/protocol_index_bad.py
A new helper converts keys through __index__ and reports IndexError when the result does not fit an index-sized integer. Assignment and deletion attempt conversion before returning unsupported-operation errors. Tests cover conversion exceptions, oversized indices, and deletion error messages.
The change propagates index-conversion errors before refusing assignment or deletion. The remaining suggestion adds regression coverage and does not block merging.

Explanation
The title names the main change: converting an __index__ key before refusing item assignment or deletion. The raw summary confirms that sequence-table objects and heap types now convert the key before the unsupported-operation error, and that the deletion message depends on the conversion result. The title is concise, specific, and matches the PR objectives and linked issue #9510. It contains no file lists, emojis, or vague terms.

Explanation
[#9510] Coding requirements: (1) call __index__ on the key before refusing assignment or deletion when the type has a sequence table; (2) propagate exceptions raised by __index__; (3) raise IndexError for an int that does not fit isize; (4) cover tuple, str, bytes, range, operator.setitem/operator.delitem, and classes without __setitem__/__delitem__.
Whole-PR diff, merge base 713e14c to head da3a3c4, in crates/vm/src/protocol/object.rs:
set_item calls sequence_index_key(...)? when seq.slots().has_any() || heaptype_ext().is_some(), before the TypeError. This covers (1) and (2).
sequence_index_key returns Ok(None) for a non-index key. It maps a try_to_primitive failure to IndexError with the message cannot fit '<type>' into an index-sized integer. This covers (3).
del_item uses the same condition and helper before it builds the refusal message. This covers (1) and (2).
The ass_item path is unchanged, so __index__ runs once on each refusal path.
Test snippet extra_tests/snippets/protocol_index_bad.py covers tuple, bytes, str, a plain class, operator.setitem/operator.delitem, the 2**70 overflow, and both deletion messages. range is not named in the snippet. It uses the same generic sequence-table branch. The PR reports a probe that includes range. I did not confirm that probe.
Limits: I did not compile or run the tests. The reported test runs and CPython comparisons are not confirmed. The source logic covers each listed requirement.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff changes two files.
crates/vm/src/protocol/object.rs: adds sequence_index_key; adds its call in set_item; changes del_item so the index-key condition selects the message wording; reads the type name after key conversion. Each change serves the #9510 ordering requirement. The message wording follows from whether the key converts to an index, which is what the issue asks for. Reading the name after conversion matches the refusal point, so a key whose __index__ renames the type gives the renamed name.
extra_tests/snippets/protocol_index_bad.py: adds import operator, RaisingIndex, Plain, Renamed, RenamingIndex and assertions. These test the issue's listed cases. The rename case tests the name-after-conversion ordering. The PR description's Changes list does not mention the rename case. This is a documentation gap, not an unrelated change.
No unrelated code or test change appears in the diff. Test-plan items in the PR description are verification steps, not code changes.

Revert the disallowed edits to the existing test snippet
These additions introduce new test logic and assertions into an existing test file, but root AGENTS.md explicitly limits the “only acceptable modifications to test files” to adding/removing @unittest.expectedFailure decorators and removing associated TODO comments. The appended regression cases and rewritten docstring fall outside that allowed set; restore the existing snippet content or obtain an explicit exception to the repository's test-edit policy.

That section covers the CPython tests in Lib/test. For extra_tests/snippets, AGENTS.md asks for new tests in the most closely related existing file (L119-L120), which is what this does. I did restore the original docstring in da3a3c4, since the new cases didn't need it rewritten.
del_item() held the read guard on a heap type's name while the key's
__index__ ran, so an __index__ that assigned the type's __name__
deadlocked a threaded build. Convert the key first and read the name
afterwards, which also names the renamed type as CPython does.
Keep the snippet's original docstring.

Add an assignment case that checks a renamed type name.
The snippet tests check a renamed type name only for deletion. set_item converts the key before it reads the type name for the error message. A change that reads the name before the conversion would still pass these tests. Use a fresh class, because the deletion case already renames Renamed to "Other".

Add an assignment-error case alongside the deletion check using fresh classes,
so it independently verifies that `set_item` reports the type name after
`RenamingIndexForAssignment.__index__` changes it; assert that the error message
uses the updated name and indicates item assignment.
