Check newline before initial_value in io.StringIO() - #9517
StringIONewArgs binds initial_value as Option<PyStrRef> ahead of newline, so a non-str initial value is rejected while the arguments are bound, before Newlines::try_from_object runs, and with a generic message. CPython's _io_StringIO___init___impl checks newline first and only then the type of initial_value.
AS-IS
>>> import io
>>> io.StringIO(True, "7")
TypeError: Expected type 'str' but 'bool' found.
>>> io.StringIO(True)
TypeError: Expected type 'str' but 'bool' found.
TO-BE
>>> io.StringIO(True, "7")
ValueError: illegal newline value: 7
>>> io.StringIO(True)
TypeError: initial_value must be str or None, not bool
(matching CPython's exception types; the ValueError wording is the existing one and still lacks CPython's quotes around the value)
Changes
In crates/vm/src/stdlib/_io.rs, bind initial_value as Option<PyObjectRef> and downcast it to str in StringIO::init, after newline has been converted, raising CPython's initial_value must be str or None, not ….
Add test_07 to extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_io_stringio.py: an invalid newline with an invalid initial value, the initial_value message, and None with "\r".
Test plan
Built and run on macOS aarch64 against upstream/main 713e14c, using the CI feature set --no-default-features --features stdlib,importlib,stdio,encodings,sqlite,ssl-rustls-aws-lc,host_env,doc,ucd_3_2_0, plus threading, compared with CPython 3.15.2.
The extended extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_io_stringio.py fails on an unpatched build of that commit (at StringIO(True, "7")) and passes with the patch and under CPython 3.15.2.
rustpython -m test test_io: 1,028 run, 49 skipped, all pass.
pytest -k rustpython in extra_tests: 248 pass.
cargo fmt --check clean, cargo clippy -p rustpython-vm -- -Dwarnings reports nothing, and the pre-commit hooks pass on both changed files.
I used Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5) to draft the analysis, the patch and this description; I reviewed the change and ran every command above myself.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
StringIO now validates the newline argument before reporting an invalid initial_value, so errors identify the first invalid argument.
Invalid non-string initial values produce a TypeError that names the value’s type.
Passing None as the initial value creates an empty buffer.
StringIO() bound initial_value as str, so a non-str initial_value was
rejected during argument binding, before newline was looked at, and
with a generic message. An invalid newline must be reported first.
Bind initial_value as any object and check its type after newline,
with the "initial_value must be str or None" message.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
StringIO now validates newline before checking whether initial_value is a string. Tests cover validation order, the error message for a non-string value, and None.
Argument binding accepts initial_value as a Python object. Initialization processes newline before converting initial_value to PyStr. Tests check the resulting errors and StringIO(None, "\r").
The change corrects StringIO validation order and error wording. No concrete merge-blocking defect remains; the suggested additional tests are optional.

Explanation
The title "Check newline before initial_value in io.StringIO()" matches the main change. The raw summary says initial_value now binds as any object and is type-checked in StringIO::init after newline is resolved. The objectives confirm this ordering fix (issue #9511) and the added test_07 snippet. The title is short, specific, and names the primary behavior change, so it passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #9511 requires newline validation before initial_value validation and the CPython-compatible initial_value error. StringIONewArgs now binds initial_value as Option<PyObjectRef>. StringIO::init resolves newline before downcasting initial_value, and it raises initial_value must be str or None, not <type>. test_07 covers invalid-newline precedence, the bool message, and None with "\r".

Limit existing test-file edits to the permitted failure markers
This adds assertions and executable test logic to an existing test file, but the root AGENTS.md explicitly limits test-file modifications to adding/removing @unittest.expectedFailure decorators and removing associated TODO comments. The new test_07, helper import, and invocation therefore violate the repository’s critical test-modification restriction; retain the Rust implementation fix without these snippet additions.

That section covers the CPython tests in Lib/test. For extra_tests/snippets, AGENTS.md asks for new tests in the most closely related existing file (L119-L120), which is what this does.
Assert the newline error message for a non-string newline.
StringIO(True, 7) raises TypeError whether the newline or the initial_value check runs first. A type-only assertion, as in the proposed assert_raises(TypeError, StringIO, True, 7), does not detect a change in precedence. Check the message instead. The newline message shows which check ran first.

Update the StringIO validation tests to call StringIO with True and 7 and assert
that the TypeError message is “newline argument must be str or None, not int,”
verifying that the newline check runs first.
Cover the user-defined class branch in the initialvalue message test.
95-96: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value
Cover the user-defined class branch in the initial_value message test.
test_07 asserts the exact message only for bool. bool is a static type, so that assertion exercises only the static branch of slot_name(). User-defined classes take the heap-type branch, which returns the stored class name. A regression in that branch would leave the current assertion passing. A class case covers this path. The current output for class statements is correct, so this guards against a future regression rather than fixing a current defect.

Extend test_07 to cover the user-defined class path in slot_name() by asserting
that passing an instance of a local class to StringIO raises TypeError with the
class name in the message; retain the existing bool assertion.
