TML-3780: SQLite gets the convenience types DateTime, Date, Time and Duration, and the date and time code targets share moves into @internal/type-implementations - #30922
TML-3780, the first slice of TML-3714 (convenience date and time types on SQLite, MySQL and MongoDB).
Summary
// SQLitemodelEvent {idInt@idatDateTime@default(now())// DatetimeJsDate: "2024-01-01T00:00:00.000Z" read as a JavaScript DateexactAtDateTime(as: temporal) // DatetimeTemporal: Temporal.InstantdayDate// DateString: "2024-02-29"opensAtTime// TimeString: "09:30:00.000"lastsDuration// DurationString: "PT1H30M"}
SQLite now has the convenience types PostgreSQL got in ADR 279: DateTime, Date, Time and Duration. Each is named for what a field means and becomes one of SQLite's explicit types, chosen by its as: argument. The contract stores only the explicit type. A bare DateTime is the type SQLite's DateTime was before, renamed DatetimeJsDate, so every existing SQLite contract emits byte for byte the same. No default needs a global Temporal.
A convenience name is a concept, not a representation
ADR 279 left the other targets undecided. ADR 315 decides them: Date means a calendar date on every target, but each target chooses how to store it and what value the application reads. SQLite has no date or time column types, so every type here is stored as text, storage: takes only text, and the data type records what the text holds:

PT1H30M, as written
The instant and the time always have three fraction digits, which is what toISOString() and SQLite's strftime('%f') write, so SQLite compares the text in the order of the values. A write converts another ISO 8601 form to the stored form and refuses digits below a millisecond rather than round them. A duration is stored as written, because ISO 8601 durations have no single form; so a filter on PT60M does not match PT1H on SQLite, and ADR 315 says so.
now() per type
@default(now()) writes the current value in each type's form: strftime('%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%fZ','now') for a DateTime, date('now') for a Date, strftime('%H:%M:%f','now') for a Time. The planner and db verify now tell these apart, so changing a field from DateTime @default(now()) to Date @default(now()) is a change the next migration makes. Before, all three read back as one now(), and the database would have kept filling new rows with text the new codec cannot read. For this, the SQL family's default resolver now receives the column's data type id, because all three columns are stored as text (one field, in contract-to-schema-ir.ts). now() on a column that holds no date or time, such as a Duration or Int, is refused with CONTRACT.DEFAULT_INVALID. @onCreate(now()) and @onUpdate(now()) work on every type that holds the current time.
The shared code has its own package, not the framework
PostgreSQL's date and time codecs and SQLite's need the same value logic: finding Temporal (the global one, else the fallback the target's control entry sets), the now() values, reading and writing Temporal values as ISO text, checks on a JavaScript Date, and the ISO 8601 duration pattern. MySQL and MongoDB will need it too. ADR 314 puts it in a new package, @internal/type-implementations, at packages/3-targets/0-shared/type-implementations:
It holds value logic only. Codec classes, error envelopes and generator registration stay in each target, and a function that finds a failure returns it as data for the target to raise.
Its only dependency is temporal-spec, for types; a test fails if it gains another.
It is registered in the targets domain, and published inside @prisma/orm-framework, which every target's published package depends on, so a process holds one copy and one fallback Temporal.
The framework holds only the interfaces targets fill in, so the layering docs now send code several targets share to 3-targets/0-shared/.
PostgreSQL now imports the moved logic. Its behaviour, error codes and messages are unchanged: its target tests pass before and after (4197).
Entries that do not load the polyfill
sqliteCreateNamespace and SqliteUnboundDatabase moved from the target's /target/control entry to a new /target/types entry, as PostgreSQL's are. The control entry loads temporal-polyfill, and the contract builder had been loading it in application processes. A published-package test, shared with PostgreSQL's, checks which entries load it.
Upgrade
temporal-polyfill is a required peer dependency of @prisma/orm-sqlite and @prisma/orm-target-sqlite. A Yarn project adds it (an upgrade instruction, detected from yarn.lock).
Extension code that imports sqliteCreateNamespace from /target/control imports it from /target/types.
A database default of date('now') no longer matches @default(now()) on a DateTime or String field; the instruction says how to write such a field.
Tests
Unit tests for every codec, tag, generator, type choice and the shared package (100% coverage).
test/integration/test/convenience-date-time-types/sqlite-journey.e2e.test.ts: emit, migrate, db verify, write and read every row, now() read-back, a migration that changes DateTime to Date, and a bare DateTime emitting the same contract as DatetimeJsDate.
sqlite-without-temporal.e2e.test.ts: emit, db init and db verify in child processes with no Temporal, and an application reading every default type without one.
examples/prisma-8-demo-sqlite stores events with DateTime, Date and Time fields and writes and reads them in CI.
Docs
ADR 314 and ADR 315 (new); amendments to ADR 242, ADR 254, ADR 278 and ADR 279; the scalar types and error references; the glossary; the layering docs; the prisma-8 skill.
Alternatives considered
Copy the date and time logic into each target. Four copies that drift apart.
Put it in @internal/framework-components. Every target depends on it already, but the framework would hold code that is there only to be reused.
A new published package for it. It would name the code's owner on npm, but ADR 242 fixes the list of published packages, and one copy per process is what @prisma/orm-framework already gives.
SQLite storage: integer for epoch milliseconds, the form the Prisma ORM query engine wrote. DatetimeJsDate already reads such rows, and SQLite has no Prisma 7 schema reader to need it.
…ic date and time logic
A new package at packages/3-targets/0-shared/type-implementations holds the
date and time logic more than one target will use: finding Temporal and its
fallback, the now() values with the maximum fraction digits as a parameter,
Temporal values to and from ISO text with failures returned as data, Date
checks, and the ISO 8601 duration pattern. It depends only on temporal-spec.

…from @internal/type-implementations
The PostgreSQL target now imports finding Temporal and its fallback, the
now() values, Temporal to and from ISO text, the Date checks and the ISO
8601 duration pattern from @internal/type-implementations. It keeps
DateStyle, BC and long years, infinity, timetz, interval parts, its codecs,
its errors and its generator registration, and turns each failure the
shared code returns into the same error, with the same code and message,
as before. The now() generators pass PostgreSQL's maximum of 6 fraction
digits.
@prisma/orm-framework publishes the package, so every target shell shares
one fallback Temporal. The published-entries test now finds the fallback in
@internal/type-implementations rather than in the target package.

DateTime becomes a type choice whose default is DatetimeJsDate, today's

…te or Time column from one on a DateTime column
A now() default on SQLite is written as the expression its data type
stores: the current instant, date('now') or the time of day. The
default normalizer now names date('now') and the time-of-day expression
by their own text instead of now(), and names a contract's now() by the
expression its column's data type writes. Changing a field between
DateTime, Date and Time with @default(now()) is now a change that
db verify reports and the next migration makes.
The SQL family's default resolver receives the column's data type id
for this, since every SQLite date and time type is stored as text.

… no current date or time
A now() database default is written on SQLite only for sqlite/datetime,
sqlite/date, sqlite/time and the text types, as PostgreSQL accepts
now() only on its date, time and text columns. On sqlite/duration,
sqlite/integer, sqlite/real, sqlite/blob and sqlite/json the migration
refuses it with CONTRACT.DEFAULT_INVALID, naming the table, the column
and the data type, instead of writing an instant that every later read
refuses. @onCreate(now()) and @onUpdate(now()) on a Duration were
already refused, and a test now says so.

…alue, and SQLite stores no PostgreSQL type name
@internal/type-implementations/now no longer holds PostgreSQL's
timestampStringNow and timestamptzStringNow ids; they are back in the
PostgreSQL target, unchanged, because emitted PostgreSQL contracts and
committed fixtures store them. The shared package adds the neutral id
instantStringNow, which SQLite's DatetimeString now binds, so a SQLite
contract never stores a PostgreSQL type name.
The shared text functions are instantStringNow, dateTimeStringNow,
dateStringNow and timeStringNow, and each takes the fraction form the
target stores: trimmed of trailing zeros for PostgreSQL, every digit
for SQLite. SQLite's string now() values are written in their stored
form directly, with no padding of a PostgreSQL-form value.

…ontract builder takes its namespace from a new types entry
@prisma/orm-sqlite/contract-builder imported sqliteCreateNamespace from
@internal/target-sqlite/control, so an application that loaded its
TypeScript contract pulled in temporal-polyfill and set the fallback
Temporal. sqliteCreateNamespace and SqliteUnboundDatabase now come from
@internal/target-sqlite/types, as PostgreSQL's come from its /types
entry, and only the control entries set the fallback.
@prisma/orm-target-sqlite gets a copy of PostgreSQL's published-entry
test: no application entry loads the polyfill, the packages that ship
the control entry declare it as a required peer, a decode without
Temporal fails after loading the runtime and contract builder entries
and works after loading the control entry. Both targets' tests now
check that the one module defining the fallback is the one in
@prisma/orm-framework, so a process holds one fallback across targets.

sqlite/datetime@1 now checks a Date with isValidDate before it writes

describeValue, which PostgreSQL's string codecs and SQLite's date and

it. The shared package no longer exports the types FractionForm,

TML-3780, the first slice of TML-3714 (convenience date and time types on SQLite, MySQL and MongoDB).
Summary
SQLite now has the convenience types PostgreSQL got in ADR 279:
DateTime,Date,TimeandDuration. Each is named for what a field means and becomes one of SQLite's explicit types, chosen by itsas:argument. The contract stores only the explicit type. A bareDateTimeis the type SQLite'sDateTimewas before, renamedDatetimeJsDate, so every existing SQLite contract emits byte for byte the same. No default needs a globalTemporal.A convenience name is a concept, not a representation
ADR 279 left the other targets undecided. ADR 315 decides them:
Datemeans a calendar date on every target, but each target chooses how to store it and what value the application reads. SQLite has no date or time column types, so every type here is stored as text,storage:takes onlytext, and the data type records what the text holds:asDateTimejsDate(default),temporal,stringDatetimeJsDate,DatetimeTemporal,DatetimeStringsqlite/datetime2024-01-01T00:00:00.000ZDatestring(default),temporalDateString,DateTemporalsqlite/date(new)2024-02-29Timestring(default),temporalTimeString,TimeTemporalsqlite/time(new)09:30:00.000DurationstringDurationStringsqlite/duration(new)PT1H30M, as writtenThe instant and the time always have three fraction digits, which is what
toISOString()and SQLite'sstrftime('%f')write, so SQLite compares the text in the order of the values. A write converts another ISO 8601 form to the stored form and refuses digits below a millisecond rather than round them. A duration is stored as written, because ISO 8601 durations have no single form; so a filter onPT60Mdoes not matchPT1Hon SQLite, and ADR 315 says so.now()per type@default(now())writes the current value in each type's form:strftime('%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%fZ','now')for aDateTime,date('now')for aDate,strftime('%H:%M:%f','now')for aTime. The planner anddb verifynow tell these apart, so changing a field fromDateTime @default(now())toDate @default(now())is a change the next migration makes. Before, all three read back as onenow(), and the database would have kept filling new rows with text the new codec cannot read. For this, the SQL family's default resolver now receives the column's data type id, because all three columns are stored astext(one field, incontract-to-schema-ir.ts).now()on a column that holds no date or time, such as aDurationorInt, is refused withCONTRACT.DEFAULT_INVALID.@onCreate(now())and@onUpdate(now())work on every type that holds the current time.The shared code has its own package, not the framework
PostgreSQL's date and time codecs and SQLite's need the same value logic: finding
Temporal(the global one, else the fallback the target's control entry sets), thenow()values, reading and writing Temporal values as ISO text, checks on a JavaScriptDate, and the ISO 8601 duration pattern. MySQL and MongoDB will need it too. ADR 314 puts it in a new package,@internal/type-implementations, atpackages/3-targets/0-shared/type-implementations:temporal-spec, for types; a test fails if it gains another.targetsdomain, and published inside@prisma/orm-framework, which every target's published package depends on, so a process holds one copy and one fallbackTemporal.3-targets/0-shared/.PostgreSQL now imports the moved logic. Its behaviour, error codes and messages are unchanged: its target tests pass before and after (4197).
Entries that do not load the polyfill
sqliteCreateNamespaceandSqliteUnboundDatabasemoved from the target's/target/controlentry to a new/target/typesentry, as PostgreSQL's are. The control entry loadstemporal-polyfill, and the contract builder had been loading it in application processes. A published-package test, shared with PostgreSQL's, checks which entries load it.Upgrade
temporal-polyfillis a required peer dependency of@prisma/orm-sqliteand@prisma/orm-target-sqlite. A Yarn project adds it (an upgrade instruction, detected fromyarn.lock).sqliteCreateNamespacefrom/target/controlimports it from/target/types.date('now')no longer matches@default(now())on aDateTimeorStringfield; the instruction says how to write such a field.Tests
test/integration/test/convenience-date-time-types/sqlite-journey.e2e.test.ts: emit, migrate,db verify, write and read every row,now()read-back, a migration that changesDateTimetoDate, and a bareDateTimeemitting the same contract asDatetimeJsDate.sqlite-without-temporal.e2e.test.ts: emit,db initanddb verifyin child processes with noTemporal, and an application reading every default type without one.examples/prisma-8-demo-sqlitestores events withDateTime,DateandTimefields and writes and reads them in CI.Docs
ADR 314 and ADR 315 (new); amendments to ADR 242, ADR 254, ADR 278 and ADR 279; the scalar types and error references; the glossary; the layering docs; the

@internal/framework-components. Every target depends on it already, but the framework would hold code that is there only to be reused.@prisma/orm-frameworkalready gives.storage: integerfor epoch milliseconds, the form the Prisma ORM query engine wrote.DatetimeJsDatealready reads such rows, and SQLite has no Prisma 7 schema reader to need it.Agent: iris-21
