Fix py_freeze! build failure on Windows without symlinks - #9172
Conversation
When git can't create symlinks (the default on Windows without Developer Mode), crates/pylib/Lib is checked out as a plain text file that holds the target path. That path is relative to the file's own folder, but py_freeze! opened it relative to the build's working directory, so building rustpython-pylib failed with "Error listing dir". Resolve the target against the folder of that file instead.

201-212: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low valueApply the same fallback fix to the file path.
Line 203 still calls
path.canonicalize().unwrap()in the Windows fallback for.pyfiles. If a path in the directory listing cannot be canonicalized, this call panics instead of returning the original errore. The newread_dirfallback no longer usescanonicalize, so the two fallbacks now behave differently. Replace theunwrapwith a non-panicking read ofpath, and keep the existing join logic.This line was not changed in this PR. The finding applies only if you want both fallbacks to be consistent.

Fixes #7995
What was wrong
On Windows, git usually can't create symlinks unless Developer Mode is on. In that case
crates/pylib/Libis checked out as a small text file that just contains../../Lib.py_freeze!knew about this and tried to read that file, but it then opened../../Libfrom the folder where the build runs, not from the folder where the file lives. So the path pointed to the wrong place and the build stopped with:What I changed
In
crates/derive-impl/src/compile_bytecode.rs, the path written inside the text file is now joined to the folder of that file. That gives the realLibfolder in the repo root.I didn't change
dir = "../Lib"incrates/pylib/src/lib.rs. That path goes through the symlink on purpose, socargo packagestill includesLibin the crate. Changing it to a path outside the crate would break that.Nothing changes on Linux and macOS, because the new code only runs on Windows.
How I tested
On Windows 11 with
core.symlinks=false:cargo check -p rustpython-pylib --features freeze-stdlibfails with the error above.cargo fmtandcargo clippy -p rustpython-derive-implare clean.Summary by CodeRabbit
