Track Python source dependencies in compile and freeze macros - #9502
Editing a Python file consumed by py_compile! or py_freeze! can leave stale bytecode in the next Cargo build because rustc does not know about the input. Record files read during expansion and emit anonymous ::core::include_bytes! constants so Cargo rebuilds consumers when those files change.
Record dependencies before UTF-8 decoding so repairing a deliberately skipped Python fixture containing invalid UTF-8 also rebuilds the consumer. Resolve dependency paths relative to the original path literal's source file, preserving wrapper macro behavior and supporting non-UTF-8 parent directories.
Add real Cargo consumer regressions for Python-only edits, nested module paths, spaces and Unicode in filenames, frozen files and packages, repaired syntax and encoding fixtures, module removal, and wrapper macros. Keep each fixture's build artifacts in its temporary directory so tests work with a read-only checkout and an external CARGO_TARGET_DIR.
Directory additions continue to require directory tracking in a consumer build script; this change tracks files read during expansion.
Validation
Reproduced the original stale-bytecode bug and the repaired-encoding regression before fixing them.
All 3 source-dependency integration tests passed, including wrapper macros under a non-UTF-8 parent directory on Linux.
The original rebuild regression also passed with the checkout mounted read-only and CARGO_TARGET_DIR outside it.
From crates/capi, cargo test: 129 passed, 0 failed.
From crates/capi, cargo clippy --all-targets: passed without warnings.
cargo fmt --all -- --check and the configured pre-commit hooks passed.
The full checks ran with CARGO_PROFILE_TEST_DEBUG=0 CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0 CARGO_PROFILE_TEST_DEBUG_ASSERTIONS=true CARGO_INCREMENTAL=0 to fit local disk space while keeping debug assertions enabled.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Changes to Python files used by compilation are now reflected when the project is rebuilt, including files loaded from directories.
Removing or correcting a Python file is reflected in subsequent builds.
Invalid text encoding in a source file now produces a diagnostic instead of being silently omitted.
Source paths that cannot be represented as UTF-8 are handled without preventing compilation.
Register files read during py_compile! and py_freeze! expansion with
anonymous include_bytes! constants so Cargo rebuilds their consumers.
Cover Python-only edits, nested packages, skipped sources, and removal
with a consumer-crate rebuild regression test.

The macros now record Python source paths during compilation and emit include_bytes! constants so Cargo tracks those inputs. Integration tests cover rebuilds after source edits, additions, removals, and non-UTF-8 path handling.

Summary
Track paths through source compilation crates/derive-impl/src/compile_bytecode.rs
Single-file and directory compilation pass a shared path list to source reads. The implementation sorts and deduplicates paths, makes paths relative to the source base when possible, and reports paths that cannot be represented as UTF-8.
Emit dependency constants and test rebuilds crates/derive-impl/src/compile_bytecode.rs, crates/derive/tests/source_dependencies.rs
Both macros emit include_bytes! constants for collected paths. Integration tests check rebuild behavior after source edits, additions, removals, invalid source replacement, and non-UTF-8 path handling.
RustPython/RustPython#9172: Both changes involve source path handling in compile_bytecode.rs during py_freeze! directory traversal.

Explanation
[#5065] Requirement: py_compile! and py_freeze! must emit include_bytes! calls so Cargo rebuilds the consumer when a referenced Python file changes. The issue has no other coding acceptance criteria.
read_source_file() calls fs::read() and records the path in source_files before UTF-8 decoding. A skipped non-UTF-8 fixture therefore still registers as a dependency.
compile_single() and compile() pass the shared Vec<PathBuf> through file, directory, and recursive directory paths.
source_dependencies() sorts and deduplicates the paths. It makes them relative to the source base, and emits #(const _: &[u8] = ::core::include_bytes!(#paths);)*. Paths that are not valid UTF-8 produce a diagnostic.
impl_py_compile() and impl_py_freeze() add these constants inside a block that also returns the existing value. Inline py_compile! source produces no paths and no constants.
Tests: crates/derive/tests/source_dependencies.rs runs real Cargo builds. It covers Python-only edits to a py_compile! file, a py_freeze! single file, and py_freeze! directory modules, including nested package paths and Unicode and spaces in filenames. It also covers a skipped syntax fixture that becomes valid and is then removed, and a non-UTF-8 fixture that becomes valid. A Linux test compiles wrapper macros from a non-UTF-8 directory with rustc.
Limit: directory additions are not tracked. The issue asks for changes to referenced input files, so this limit does not fail the requirement.
No unresolved uncertainty remains for this requirement.

Explanation
The whole-PR file list contains crates/derive-impl/src/compile_bytecode.rs and crates/derive/tests/source_dependencies.rs. The diff of crates/derive/Cargo.toml from the merge base to head is empty, so no manifest change is present.
compile_bytecode.rs changes the py_compile! and py_freeze! expansion. This is the behavior named in #5065. The changes add source-path recording, dependency constant emission, the span retained on the path literal for include resolution, and the signature changes that thread the path list through compilation. Each of these supports the dependency tracking.
The BOM removal and the UTF-8 error text in read_source_file are kept. The badsyntax skip in the directory path is unchanged.
crates/derive/tests/source_dependencies.rs contains only regression tests for this behavior. Its test setup keeps build output in the temporary project directory. This supports the tests and adds no unrelated behavior.
The PR description lists validation commands and results. These are not code changes and do not affect this assessment.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 11.11% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 9 functions across 2 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The new dependency helper rejects a recorded path whose absolute representation is not UTF-8, even though read_source_file has already read that Python file successfully.
py_compile! or py_freeze! fails expansion for a source it could previously compile.
This can occur when: A valid file argument names a readable Python file beneath a directory with a non-UTF-8 name.

Add an edit-and-rebuild check for a non-UTF-8 parent directory.
compiles_from_non_utf8_directory_through_wrapper_macros asserts only that the rustc probe succeeds. A change that drops the include_bytes! dependency for directory/source.py or directory/package/module.py would still compile. Extend the test so it edits one of those files after a build and asserts that the rebuilt output changes.

Extend compiles_from_non_utf8_directory_through_wrapper_macros beyond the

wrapper-macro coverage intact.
